This draft strategy has been prepared by the Waste Authority of Western Australia and aims to create an environment which encourages waste avoidance, resource recovery and responsible disposal of that portion of the waste stream for which it is currently unsustainable to achieve effective recovery.
The Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Act 2007 established the Waste Authority and required it to develop a long term Waste Strategy for Western Australia. The strategy is obliged to plan for continuous improvement of waste services, waste avoidance and resource recovery, benchmarked against best practice. It must set whole of state targets for waste reduction, resource recovery and the diversion of waste from landfill disposal.
The draft waste strategy was closed to the public on 10th December 2009 following three months public review and consultation. Analysis of the submissions received and comments from workshops formed the basis for the recommendations for the revision of the draft waste strategy. Draft II Waste Strategy is the result of these recommendations.
Draft II Waste Strategy for Western Australia was subsequently released by the Waste Authority for a 28 day review. This period closed on 19th April 2010. .
Submissions are now being analysed and the final document will be released on approval from the Minister of the Environment.
