New Glass Reprocessing Plant Opens
WA's newest reprocessing plant is set to reduce glass to landfill and improve recycling outcomes. Jointly funded by the Waste Authority and the Australian Packaging Covenant Industry Association, it is located in Kewdale and operated by Colmax.

Massive E-Waste Clean-Up at City of Stirling
More than 68 tonnes of e-waste including computers, monitors and CD players has been collected by the City of Stirling.
The City took part in a recent e-waste program, recycling all but 3.5 tonnes of the material collected, as part of an e-Waste Recycling and Monitoring Project, funded by the Waste Authority of Western Australia.

State’s Draft Waste Strategy Calls for Action
The State’s Waste Authority says there is a need for increased public education around
wise waste management and support for producers of goods to take more responsibility
for disposal of waste from their own products.
The Waste Authority has reviewed the 1440 public comments received on the Draft
State Waste Strategy, released for public comment late last year.

Waste Authority and Local Government Team up to Increase Free Collection Days for Household Hazardous Waste
There will be a new focus on collecting hazardous waste from households across Western Australia in an effort to stop material like old paint, gas bottles and flammable liquids ending up at landfill sites.
The Waste Authority of Western Australia together with the Western Australian Local Government Association will ensure that hazardous waste is collected safely and disposed of more regularly to make it easier for people to get rid of items like old paint, batteries, gas bottles and cleaning materials.

Riverside Primary School Recycled Art Project Finalist in Environment Awards
A Mandurah primary school arts project has made it as a finalist in this year’s Western Australian Environment Awards for its festival recycled arts installation.
Riverside Primary School’s Year 4 class put together the recycled maze, made of recycled materials, for the Mandurah Stretch Festival, an annual community arts festival held in early May.
The Trans-Cube-ation project involved the use of large recyclable cubes sponsored by Cleanaway for the event. The Year 4 students worked with their teacher, Terry Wozniuk, and a French artist, Bénédicte Guilhon, to produce an artistic maze entirely from recycled objects for the project.

Asphalt Maker Takes a Shine to Recycling
Local roads, road users and the environment are benefiting from a recycling initiative by asphalt
manufacturer, Pioneer Road Services.
At its Hazelmere plant, the company is crushing waste glass that would otherwise be consigned
to landfill, and reusing it as an asphalt additive that saves energy, reduces our environmental load
and improves road safety.

Making Fuel out of Waste Oil to Benefit Remote Communities
The State's Waste Authority is working with local companies and innovators on an exciting project to turn waste oil into fuel designed to power mining operations and remote Western Australian communities.
The Waste Authority's Strategic Waste Initiatives Scheme using funding from the levy on all waste that goes to landfill has enabled Blue Plant Energy to complete laboratory testing of LoNOX, a fuel suitable for static power generation plants.

Great Southern Residents Have Their Say about Waste & Recycling
Local people from Albany and the surrounding region said today they wanted increased focus on community education and awareness to help them meet waste reduction and recycling standards.

Better Disposal of Plastics in the Gascoyne
There may soon be much less plastic mulch film going to landfill in the Gascoyne thanks to work being undertaken by the Gascoyne Development Commission and Bowman & Associates to look for biodegradable and recycling alternatives.
Traditionally fruit and vegetable plantations are covered by thin plastic mulch film to suppress weed growth and improve crop production, underlain by plastic drip irrigation tape.

Local people in Rockingham are being encouraged to turn their “trash into treasure” at a series of Sustainable Living Workshops being held at the Sustainability Shop, Naragebup, Rockingham Regional Environment Centre.

Fremantle residents Shani Graham and Tim Darby are leading the way in encouraging their local community not to throw out „everyday? style dry cell batteries, but to recycle them instead.
From September, old household batteries (dry-cell) can be dropped off at any one of more than 150 new battery recycling bins around Perth.

Stepping onto the glass brick road
The use of pulverized glass in the manufacture of brick pavers will take a step closer after Bowman and Associates was awarded an $11, 500 grant from the Waste Authority’s Strategic Waste Initiative Scheme (SWIS). The grant will investigate the logistics of transporting glass stockpiled at the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council’s Red Hill waste management facility to a glass producer, then onto Midland Brick’s plant in Midland.
