Plant Pot recycling in Western Australia

An estimated 100 million plant pots are used in Western Australia in a year (2006), consuming 8000 tonnes of polypropylene, a plastic that can be completely recycled to make new pots and a range of other products such as ice-cream containers, carpet and even artificial grass.
In May 2008 Bunnings and SITA were approved with a grant from the National Packaging Covenant (NPC) to conduct a state-wide trial to provide recycling bins and processing for plastic plant pots over 23 stores. This also had the potential to divert over 120 tonnes of waste from landfill in the 4 month trial (View full project details here). The funding trial has since been completed, however some locations for recycling polypropylene plant pots are still available in Western Australia.
