Massive E-Waste Clean-Up at City of Stirling

More than 68 tonnes of e-waste including computers, monitors and CD players has been collected by the City of Stirling. The City took part in a recent e-waste program, recycling all but 3.5 tonnes of the material collected, as part of an e-Waste Recycling and Monitoring Project, funded by the Waste Authority of Western Australia.

Grant for Mandurah company compost standards used in roadside landscaping

Mandurah-based compost producer Custom Composts has been awarded grant funding under the State Government’s Strategic Waste Initiatives Scheme (SWIS) to develop a standard for application and use of compost in roadside landscaping. Environment Minister Donna Faragher said the company would receive $25,000 towards development costs. “The grant will build on the significant investment made in innovative demonstration projects on the Perth-Bunbury Highway for recycling a range of materials. Using composted materials in roadside rehabilitation is common practice in other States but has not been widely used before in Western Australia,” Mrs Faragher said.

Asphalt Maker Takes a Shine to Recycling

Local roads, road users and the environment are benefiting from a recycling initiative by asphalt manufacturer, Pioneer Road Services. At its Hazelmere plant, the company is crushing waste glass that would otherwise be consigned to landfill, and reusing it as an asphalt additive that saves energy, reduces our environmental load and improves road safety.

Making Fuel out of Waste Oil to Benefit Remote Communities

The State's Waste Authority is working with local companies and innovators on an exciting project to turn waste oil into fuel designed to power mining operations and remote Western Australian communities. The Waste Authority's Strategic Waste Initiatives Scheme using funding from the levy on all waste that goes to landfill has enabled Blue Plant Energy to complete laboratory testing of LoNOX, a fuel suitable for static power generation plants.

Better Disposal of Plastics in the Gascoyne

There may soon be much less plastic mulch film going to landfill in the Gascoyne thanks to work being undertaken by the Gascoyne Development Commission and Bowman & Associates to look for biodegradable and recycling alternatives. Traditionally fruit and vegetable plantations are covered by thin plastic mulch film to suppress weed growth and improve crop production, underlain by plastic drip irrigation tape.

Stepping onto the glass brick road

The use of pulverized glass in the manufacture of brick pavers will take a step closer after Bowman and Associates was awarded an $11, 500 grant from the Waste Authority’s Strategic Waste Initiative Scheme (SWIS). The grant will investigate the logistics of transporting glass stockpiled at the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council’s Red Hill waste management facility to a glass producer, then onto Midland Brick’s plant in Midland.

Environmental excellence in Western Australia was rewarded last night with the announcement that Green Skills had won the overall prize in the 2010 WA Environment Awards. Presenting the awards at a gala ceremony in Perth last night, Environment Minister Donna Faragher said Green Skills’ commitment to improving and enhancing environmental care and sustainability since 1989 had seen it win the award from a pool of outstanding projects from throughout the State.

New battery recycling bins for Perth

Environment Minister Donna Faragher today launched a new recycling initiative to encourage Perth residents to recycle common household batteries. The Metropolitan Household Battery Recycling program, the first community-based program of its kind in Australia, provides householders with the opportunity to safely dispose of and recycle old batteries. Under the program, being rolled out by Perth’s five metropolitan regional councils, 150 new battery drop-off recycling bins have been installed in public libraries, council administration offices and leisure centres across Perth. From the bins, the batteries are collected, sorted, melted and recycled into new products.
