Landfill Gas Emissions

The major greenhouse gas (GHG) emission from the solid waste sector is methane (CH4) from landfills. Methane is over 20 times more effective at trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide and remains in the atmosphere for 9-15 years.

The Waste Management Branch has taken the lead role in developing an issues and options paper on landfill gas emissions to be considered by the Environmental Protection and Heritage Council. This work has explored the potential for the States and Territories to undertake activities which will lead to better management of landfill gas. These activities have been analysed in the context of the anticipated introduction of an emissions trading scheme, which is likely to cover emissions from landfills.
