Hot Topic Archives: Landfill Levy Discussion Forum
The Waste Authority will be holding a discussion forum to canvass the views of stakeholders on how the levy will apply at category 63 landfill sites (inert landfills).
Earlier this year the Waste Authority had foreshadowed additional non-metropolitan discussion forums on the issue of extending the landfill levy beyond the metropolitan area. Due to a current incapacity to deliver at this time these forums have been postponed. Non- metropolitan forums will occur in the future.
Category 63 (inert landfill) amendments discussion forum
Subject matter of discussion forum
The Waste Authority intends to finalise its position in this calendar year on how the levy should apply to category 63 landfills, with a view to modifying relevant Regulations.
The levy at category 63 sites had been foreshadowed to rise to $5 per cubic metre in 2008/9, $7 in 2009/10 and $9 in 2010/11. Earlier this year the Waste Authority decided to freeze the levy at $3 per cubic metre pending the outcome of more discussions with stakeholders. The current landfill levy Regulations for category 63 landfills can be found on the state law publishers website at http://www.slp.wa.gov.au
Forum structure
The Waste Authority has set aside time (2 hours) at the Waste and Recycle Conference on Tuesday 9th September 2008 from 3:30pm to allow views from selected speakers to be heard at a single forum. The forum will be facilitated by the Chairman of the Waste Authority, Mr Barry Carbon, who will also provide introductory comments.
The Waste Authority has indicated that it will invite short presentations to the forum from a number of speakers on how the landfill levy should be applied to category 63 sites. After the presentations there will be discussions, and questions and comments from the floor. The Waste Authority members will be in attendance and may ask questions of the speakers.
How to participate
Attendance at the forum is to be free of charge but will require registration for catering and seating purposes. Afternoon tea will be served at 3pm followed by the forum proper which will run from 3:30pm until 5:30pm and will be followed by the conference sundowner. Delegates to the forum are welcome to attend the sundowner.
Interested parties can register their attendance by sending their name, organisation and contact details to leanne.reid@dec.wa.gov.au by no later than COB 28th August 2008.
Any queries relating to the subject matter of these forums should be referred to the Waste Authority.
