Hot Topic Archives: DECreasing litter at DEC sites for Business Clean Up Day
As a joint initiative of the Department of Environment and Conservation’s (DEC) DECrease project and the Keep Australia Beautiful Council (KABC), DEC staff have been encouraged to register a group for Business Clean Up Day on Tuesday 24 February.
Business Clean Up Day is an arm of the annual Clean Up Australia Day activities and is coordinated nationally by Clean Up Australia.
DECrease Senior Project Coordinator James Milne encouraged DEC staff to get a team together for a couple of hours to clean up a DEC-managed area of litter.
“Taking part in Business Clean Up Day is easy, fun and a great example of DEC staff leading the way in creating sustainable outcomes from their work,” James said.
“Where better to start than on DEC-managed land.” he said.

Clean Up Australia Day and Business Clean Up Day are becoming increasingly important as Australians are among the highest producers of waste, per person, in the world.
Sadly, an estimated seven billion cigarette butts end up in Australian waterways, streets and parklands each year and 80 million plastic bags end up as rubbish - posing a serious threat to our precious wildlife.
Since 1990, volunteers taking part in Clean Up Australia Day activities have collected more than 200,000 tonnes of rubbish - the equivalent of 4.7 million household wheelie bins.
