Businesses are already approaching the DEC-supported Keep Australia Beautiful Council requesting areas that they can help clean on Business Clean Up Day on 24 February.

Community Education Officer Kate MacRae said that people often wanted to help clean up areas that were sometimes overlooked.

“Around Clean Up Australia Day we start to get calls and emails from people requesting sites to go to. People are becoming more aware of the areas that get a lot of attention on Clean Up Australia Day, like beaches and river fronts, and are looking for other areas that need attention,” she said.

“In Western Australia, road verges and industrial rubbish sites have been identified as the biggest litter problem and DEC rangers often identify road side verges that need attention.”

The Keep Australia Beautiful Council encourages people to nominate areas that need some attention. These areas will be added to a list and distributed to businesses. If your nominated area is chosen, the business will contact you for your input about what needs to be done.

To nominate a location for Business Clean Up Day please email the name, location, type of problem, and your contact name to kate.macrae@dec.wa.gov.au. If the area is an illegal dumping site where the clean up is more onerous than normal, make sure to include this information in your description.

The 19th annual community Clean Up Australia Day falls on March 1 2009 and the Schools Clean Up Day is on February 27. For more information about organising a group or to register and obtain a clean up kit visit http://www.cleanup.org.au/.
