Draft Waste Strategy: Workshop & Submission Analysis Report
This document follows the following approaches:
*The data from the Workshops and Public Submissions were broken down and
applied to the Draft Waste Strategy for Western Australia (the “Strategy”)
*By looking at the data relating to a section in the Strategy, major themes (and
sub-themes) were identified (e.g. the need for a greater focus on education).
*Every piece of feedback was associated to one of the themes identified for a
particular section.
*This document was created. It outlines:
-the themes identified;
-the amount of feedback that focused on this theme;
-the sub-themes identified;
-some of the larger stakeholders that included this theme;
-a link to the responses that included this theme; and
-some high level recommendations around these themes and the feedback around them.

List of Battery Recycle Bins in Perth
Old household batteries (dry-cell) can be dropped off at any one of over 150 new battery recycling bins around Perth. This community initiative is the first of its kind in Australia and gives everyone the ability to recycle common household batteries at a range of convenient locations.
It is estimated over 18 million household batteries are thrown away in Western Australia each year. By separating your batteries from ordinary household rubbish, these valuable resources can be recycled into a range of new products, such as street lights and car parts, rather than go to waste.

Native ARC Organic Waste
Management Plan - February 2009
Native Arc is a native animal rehabilitation clinic locate in Bibra Lake. They
care and rehabilitate a wide variety of birds and mammals covering a vast
area. Through their day to day tasks a large amount of organic waste is
accumulated including food scraps, newspaper, cardboard and animal
manure.
As part of a plan to become a sustainable centre, they received a Towards
Zero Waste grant for $10 000 to implement an on-site organic waste
management system. In order to find the most suitable system for the clinic
a waste audit was conducted and the volunteers monitored, which found that
a number of large insulated worm bins would be the easiest to manage, but
also provide extra feed for the animals through harvesting worms and a
healthy organic fertiliser for their gardens.
5 large 1 metre by 2 metre insulated worm bins were supplied by The Worm
Shed, who have supported the process and who should be called in future for
any questions or concerns. Kevin and Debbie Smith can be contacted at The
Worm Shed on (08) 9571 8003, or at www.wormshed.com.au. This
management plan has been adapted by The Worm Shed’s guide lines so that
there is a continuation of information, development and procedure.
This management plan frames the systems principles and objectives and then
goes through 3 stages of management and outlines each stages timing and
responsibilities requirements. It will be used as an induction document for all
new volunteers who may need to take on the management tasks at Native Arc

Benefits of Recycling Calculator: Calculator Explanatory Notes, Final Report August 2008
Hyder Consulting was commissioned by the Department of Environment and
Conservation in Western Australia (DEC) to develop a tool aimed at increasing
awareness and understanding of the environmental benefits of collecting and recycling
commodity materials from the kerbside.
Approximately 138,000 tonnes of post consumer materials are
collected for reprocessing, from domestic kerbside collections in Western Australia
(WA) each year. Recycling of these materials presents significant benefits
economically as well as environmentally.

Benefits of Recycling Calculator Tool
This is a tool to calculate and demonstrate the environmental benefits of recycling in Western Australia. It is intended to be used to estimate or predict the benefits of current or future recycling and primarily relates to recyclables collected at the kerbside. The tool is designed to be used by council waste practitioners and by householders. Waste practitioners can use the tool to the benefits of recycling in the State or Local Government Area (LGA). If you are a householder, the tool will enable you to determine the benefits of your recycling efforts.

Focusing on the benefits of compost for… Urban Amenity
Community groups across Western
Australia have identified urban amenities,
including adequate areas for public open
space and bushland, as an increasingly
valuable feature of our cities, towns and
suburbs. The same level of importance
has also been placed on areas of
vegetation along roadsides which stabilise
embankments, provide wildlife corridors
and help maintain urban biodiversity.
At the same time, WA’s climate and other
environmental conditions, in particular
the condition of our soil, can present
challenges to local governments and other
authorities responsible for providing such
amenities.

Focusing on the benefits of compost for… Vegetable Growers
In Western Australia, where the soil is
generally low in fertility and organic
matter, the use of compost has been
found to provide many benefits when
growing vegetables. This is particularly
the case when it has been subjected to
intensive agricultural practices.
Research has shown the application
of compost as part of the preparation
and ongoing management of vegetable
crops can increase both crop quality
and production. At the same time the
requirements for irrigation and artificial
fertiliser are also decreased.

Focusing on the benefits of compost for… Viticulture
Using a compost mulch application during
vineyard establishment has been proven
to give vines a great head start.
With conservative estimates of irrigation
savings between 20 and 30 per cent
when compost mulches are applied, it’s
no surprise that many viticulturists are
investigating the use of compost mulches
to make savings in their watering
requirements.
