Waste Authority Grant Scheme Recipient Showcase
Towards Zero Waste is proud to present some of the fantastic projects that have been developed, with assistance of the Waste Authority of Western Australia's Grant Schemes. The Community Grant Scheme (CGS) and Strategic Waste Initiative Scheme (SWIS) help to promote management of resources and reduction of waste produced in Western Australia.
Each unique case study looks at Reusing, Reducing or Recycling waste around Western Australia by the community, Local Councils or by local business; so take a look through the case studies, and check back to find new projects as they happen.

            Green Skills Inc: Events Pilot Project
Green Skills has helped event managers develop Waste Action Plans aimed at minimising waste generation and maximising recovery. Strategies include buying equipment and educating event staff, vendors and patrons to facilitate behavioural change.

The Vale Smart Builders Program aims to minimise the amount of building material sent as waste to landfill. Separation of resources and recyclables from waste on building sites is a key aspect of the program.

          Murdoch University: Solid Waste Management Centre
This National Lifestyle Villages Pty Ltd in partnership with the Environmental Technology Centre (Murdoch University) have effectively constructed an 'Asset Recovery Centres' in the village where householders take their wastes and are trained in sorting them.

            Yiyili Community Aboriginal Corporation: Community Composting Program
The project involves the introduction of composting bins for effective use of green waste, and the introduction of recycling bins to allow for the efficient removal and recycling of non-green recyclable waste products by separation.

            Junkbusters Inc: Junkbusters Drop 'n' Shop reuse centre
Junkbusters Inc is a community run recycled material resale centre aiming to minimise waste by intercepting reusable rubbish on its way to landfill, refurbishing it and selling it to the public at bargain prices.

            Hare Krishna's Food For Life Recycling Project
The society's proposal was to recommence composting at their organically farmed community garden in Bayswater using enclosed tumble compost bins. When they originally started their organic garden they set up a series of open compost heaps, which provided good quality compost, but tended to attract flies and emit bad odours.

            Reaching Small to Medium Business in Bellevue
That is something the Swan Catchment Council hopes to change, through a project that is connecting small businesses in the Bellevue Industrial Area with major waste reduction, reuse and recycling operations.

            Gascoyne Challenges, Feasability Study
Recycling at some of WA’s most environmentally sensitive tourist areas, including Coral Bay and Shark Bay, will be considered as part of a study into waste management in the Gascoyne, funded by the Strategic Waste Initiative Scheme.
The Gascoyne Development Commission has been awarded a grant to conduct a feasibility study into a waste management project for the region.

            From Trash to Treasure
One person's trash is another one's treasure according to Junkbusters Inc - a not-for-profit registered charity operating within the City of Armadale.
Operating the highly successful Drop 'n' Shop Reuse Centre at the Hopkinson Road landfill site, Junkbusters intercepts reusable rubbish that arrives at the site and sells it to the public at bargain prices.
Junkbusters chairperson Muriel White said they see some amazing items being thrown away, many of which could be recycled or reused.
